The ecosystem of Morrocoy National Park is extremely diverse. The park contains four main ecosystems: tropical dry forest (dominated by cacti and legumes), mangroves (breeding grounds for many fish and birds), coral reefs (home to some of the northernmost coral communities in the Caribbean), and seagrass meadows.
It is a habitat for over 300 species of birds, including roseate spoonbills, flamingos, and pelicans. The marine area is home to sea turtles, dolphins, manatees (West Indian manatee), and a wide variety of tropical fish. The coral reef system is particularly important as part of the Greater Caribbean Ecosystem.
